Since 2010, Janus College Preparatory & Arts Academies, Inc. (JCPAA) has provided technique-based training/instruction for youth, teens, and adults in the Fine and Performing Arts. Located in the heart of downtown Milwaukee's Arts community, within the historic Plankinton Building, we teach theory and technique in music, dance, theatre, visual arts. Students receive professional arts instruction, participate in performances, and receive support to help meet their personal needs.
Our mission is to strengthen youth and young adults through exposure to the arts, provide opportunities for creative expression, and provide opportunities for youth to explore their creativity and talents through the arts. Whether students become artists themselves, work in an arts-related field, enjoy the arts as patrons or support the arts our vision is for the arts to contribute positively to young peoples’ lives.
The goal is to engage youth in arts focused learning in areas of interest to them in order to increase their motivation to attend and participate in school. Research indicates that the learning process, in which students experience, explore/imitate, describe, label, practice create, and then maintain; is the key to teaching for higher order thinking (Blooms). This learning process not only demands hands-on, brains-on teaching and learning, it is the process through which the arts are naturally assimilated and learned. Therefore by teaching in, about, and through the arts, the arts become the lab for learning in all disciplines. They also become an avenue for learning how to learn throughout life.
Students learn the fundamentals and techniques in the four program areas. JCPAA broadens the knowledge of our students by introducing them to the world of the arts and teaching the fundamentals and techniques. Youth and young adults ages 6-19 receive professional arts instruction, enjoy performances and exhibits, and receive tutoring, mentoring and coaching to achieve academically and pursue their interest in the arts.
These opportunities are provided by:
▪ Professional instruction and arts education is offered through after-school and summer programs allowing children and young adults to express and develop their unique talents in a culturally diverse offering of visual arts, dance, music and theatre programs.
▪ Exposure to the arts through performances, attendance at arts performances, galleries and events and visits to professionals and instructors working in the arts inspires an appreciation of the arts.
▪ Tutoring and mentoring is offered to students to ensure academic and personal growth success, and coaching is offered to students seeking secondary educational opportunities in the arts.
After School & Weekend Programming Technique-Based Arts Education and Instruction
▪ Visual Arts program includes painting, sketching, mural design techniques.
▪ Dance program focuses on providing opportunities to discover various dance forms including ballet, Modern dance, contemporary and Hip-Hop.
▪ Theatre program explores various acting styles in both musicals and plays and teaches techniques such as voice projection, articulation, and script reading.
▪ Music program trains students to be vocalists by teaching breathing, annunciation, and tonality techniques. In addition, students are exposed to various music genres.
▪ Other art disciplines film/video, poetry, design media, fashion, and sports conditioning.
